Due to the success experienced in the global market, international tea brand, Chaplon Tea, has announced the anticipated launch of its exclusive range into the South African market. The quality tea varieties are all produced using sustainable and natural principles, and will provide South African tea lovers with unique and tantalising flavours inspired by nature and cultures from all corners of the globe.
The essence of Chaplon Tea is driven by the love of superior quality tea, and founder, Jais Lauritsen, travelled throughout Asia for many years researching the fundamental principles involved in cultivating and enjoying tea of the highest quality before establishing the brand in 2003.
The brand provides South Africans with enticing tea varieties produced according to sustainable principles from Chaplon’s own tea plantations in Sri Lanka, the former Ceylon, where Ceylon tea has been cultivated since 1875.
The brand’s unique flavours include the refreshing Full Moon, a blend of Green and herbal tea, which is excellent both as a hot and an iced drink, and particularly delicious for children as it has a naturally sweet taste. Ceylon Single Estate Uva is Chaplon’s top quality black tea named after the renowned tea growing province in Sri Lanka, and is known for its smooth and mellow flavour. Earl Grey is a blend of high quality tea which contains bergamot oil, specially sourced from Italy, where it is pressed in the old fashioned way, and gives the tea a slightly stronger taste of mandarin. The Quince flavour is delightfully fruity, and is produced from leaves harvested in spring along with Quince oil. A specially crafted Christmas blend has also been created for the festive season and will be available in South Africa from November 2014. Additional flavours such as Mint and Mountain Flower will be launched in South Africa in 2015.

She says that in order to achieve the highest quality tea, Chaplon leaves are cultivated according to Japanese principles. “Our main focus is on quality rather than quantity, and although this method of production yields less crop, it results in a much better flavour. This also means we may only be able to release a limited amount of tea each season.”
Frey explains that the tea bushes are grown on a high-altitude plantation in Sri Lanka, approximately 1000 meters above sea level. “The high altitude slows down the growing process, thereby allowing the tea bushes more time to develop. This process enhances the aroma, colour, texture, and flavour of the tea.” She notes that, through a fair, ethical and ecological business-practice, Chaplon follows the most natural and sustainable practises from inception to cup and saucer.
All Chaplon tea leaves are grown without the use of fertiliser and chemicals, thereby respecting both nature and the employees who carefully select the leaves. “No chemicals, pesticides or artificial fertilisers are used on the tea bushes at Chaplon’s plantation or during processing. We choose natural and sustainable practises so that consumers are able to enjoy a healthy beverage that has not impacted negatively on the environment or the farmers involved.”
Frey says that for Chaplon it is very important that the tea is produced with respect for both humans and the land, and therefore sustainability is also a question of social responsibility. “In Sri Lanka, which has been left vulnerable after years of civil war and natural disasters, Chaplon is focused on developing the local communities where the tea plantations are located. The harvesters have a challenging and strenuous job, and we therefore ensure that working hours are kept to only six hours a day, with the employees earning an above average salary. Our plantation employees and their families also receive free healthcare and educational classes.”
