The provision of an integrated public transport system is one of the key objectives of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT). This objective aims to provide public transport users with the convenience of switching between different modes of public transport such as buses, trains and taxis.
The GDRT continues to work with other transport entities such as the Gautrain Management Agency, Taxi Associations, Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa and the Municipalities of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni to investigate ways of ensuring that there is a harmonious integration of all public transport modes in the Province through possible coordination of schedules, fares and ticketing systems so that passengers can have short waiting times, reduced travel time, greater flexibility and accessibility. This will also allow passengers to plan their trips accurately thereby making public transport a mode of choice.
In future, public transport users will also be able to use a single ticketing system for all modes of public transport across Gauteng. In addition to integrated ticketing, efforts have been made to make it easy for passengers to transfer between Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System, Metrorail, Municipal buses and Gautrain. There are currently BRT and Metrorail stations in close proximity to the Gautrain stations at Park, Rhodesfield, Pretoria and Hatfield. The plan is to also integrate more BRT and Municipal bus routes with the Gautrain feeder bus routes.
The Gautrain system is the backbone of an integrated public transport system through its train, bus and parking system in the Province.
The Gautrain system is the backbone of an integrated public transport system through its train, bus and parking system in the Province. The integrated ticketing system allows the passenger to pay for their train rides, bus rides and parking with a single card. Passengers can buy their Gold Cards at any Gautrain station. Buses and shuttles are available to transport passengers during weekdays to and from all stations excluding the OR Tambo station.
